Bonita Norto Burnley Abernathy

Kevil, KY Bonita Norton Burnley Abernathy, age 94, passed away Sunday Evening at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Bonita graduated from Kevil High School in 1940 as Salutatorian. She was a life long member of Kevil United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 60 years. The children she taught in Sunday School called her Miss Bonita or the Hat Lady.
She loved Kentucky Wildcats. Bonita was a 46 year member of the Ballard County Extension Homemakers Association. She served the association as County President from 1981-1982. As a member of the Kevil Jr. Homemakers Club, she served in the capacity as Club President as well as several program chairmanships. Bonita was also committed to the associations many community events. Bonita had a unique way of storytelling and was often called upon to share them at the Association's annual meeting.

Mrs. Abernathy wrote a book about the family home, Whitehaven, sharing a trip back in time to the old South in the years 1860-1903. Whitehaven was built by her great grandfather, Edward L. Anderson, during the Civil War. Today Whitehaven is a Kentucky Welcome Center located in Paducah and is admired by thousands of tourists who stop by each year. She was also a long time member of Unitet Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Bonita is survived by one son, Tim Abernathy of Kevil, KY, one daughter Charlotte Holt and her husband John of Kevil, KY. One grandson Rob Wurth and his wife Shawna of West Paducah, KY, two great grandsons, Brenen Wurth and Brice
Wurth both of West Paducah, Ky. One brother Robert Burnley and his wife Donna Sue of Danville, KY.

She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Stone Abernathy Jr., one infant son David Matthew Abernathy, four brothers William Thomas Burnley, Edwin Burnley, Van Burnley and Richard Burnley. One sister Marie Gholson and her parents William Thomas and Edna Anderson Burnley.

Visitation will be Wednesday, after 11:00 a.m. at Morrow Funeral Chapel in Kevil, KY.

Funeral Services will be at 12:00 Wednesday at Morrow Funeral Chapel in Kevil, KY with the Rev. Randy Stacy officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Kenton Cemetery in Paducah, KY.
