Obituary

Paducah, KY, James Davis Campbell, age 82, died Friday at Lourdes Hospice in Paducah. James Davis Campbell grew up in Smithland, KY, moving to the Heath area where he attended Heath High School. He met and married his soulmate Barbara Ann Shelby in 1952. Moving his new bride to San Diego, he served in the Navy during the Korean War on the USS Dixie, earning the Korean Service medal, National Defense, United Nations, and China service Medals. This was the only time during their 63 years together they were apart for any length of time. They returned to Kentucky where he worked for a time at Ford Motor Company in Louisville as an electrician. They had 2 boys, then moved to Michigan where Barbara's parents were living and their daughter was born. James Davis worked in maintenance for Livonia Public Schools for 30 years and it was a normal occurrence for "Big Jim" to do electrical work or plumbing for his co-workers outside of school on a regular basis. He served as AFSCME president for his local for several years, leading contract negotiations during difficult periods of economic instability in the 70s. He was the consummate outdoorsman: fishing, farming, building...but his passion for hunting was well known by all who met him. He kept a hunting "cabin" in Iron River, MI (Upper Peninsula) where he would hunt bear and bobcat, as well as, lead excursions for "city folk" to experience that adventure. Along with fixing their home maintenance problems, he was often called to trap raccoons, foxes, and other "critters" that had found their way into the homes of people he worked with. From childhood he would hunt squirrel, raccoon, and rabbits--passing that thrill for adventure and knowledge of the hunt on to his children and grandchildren. He raised and trained all manner of hunting dogs throughout his life and after retirement kept all varieties of chickens and other birds. James Davis was a member of Covenant Community Church in Redford, MI where he served for decades as an usher and assisted in maintenance issues. He transferred his membership to Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Gage after retiring and returning to KY. He was recently happily reunited with his only known surviving cousins Warner Guy Cothran (Wanda) of Smithland, Ruth Joiner of Lone Oak, and J. D. (James Dale) Cothran of Paducah. He is survived by his two sons Joe Davis Campbell (Kay) of Madisonville, KY, and Fred Allan Campbell (Joyce) of Novi, MI, one daughter Lynda Sue Bommarito (Alfonso) of Redford, MI, four grandchildren, Marc Joseph Bommarito, Alfonso Michael Bommarito Jr., Shelby Lucia Bommarito and Rachel Barbara Bommarito and two Great grandchildren Joshua Davis Bommarito, and Alfonso Michael Bommarito III. He is joining his wife of 63 years Barbara Ann (Shelby) Campbell after her passing 3 months earlier. He was preceded in death by one sister, Laverne Gray, and 3 brothers, Cleatus, Calvin, and Glendon and his parents Lillian (McLure) and Fred Campbell. Funeral Services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Morrow Funeral Chapel in Kevil (Morrow Funeral Chapel, 449 Wyatt Avenue, Kevil, KY 42053) with the Rev. Drew Gray offficiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be after 10:00 a.m. Friday at Morrow Funeral Chapel in Kevil.
