Robert Murray Thompson, passed on Dec. 3rd, 24 days short of his 92nd birthday and 14 months after the passing of his wife of 65 years Colleen Parker Thompson.
Losing his father at the at the age of 5, on the cusp of the Great Depression, split his family, but gave Bob an unshakable love of family and place.
Except for a year in the Navy during World War II that interrupted his education and his singing career at Heath High School, he never strayed far from his birthplace on
Joppa Landing Road in Western McCracken County Kentucky or from Newton Creek Baptist Church.
Returning from the Pacific he married the love of his life Colleen Parker in March of 1949.
In the 1950s, he ran a " Rolling Store" out of the Parker & Thompson General Store in Ragland, Kentucky before being employed in the early 1960s by the McCracken County Road Department until his
retirement as the "County Foreman" in 1985.
He was a 45 year member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge #707 at Grahamville, Kentucky,
a Duke of Paducah, a Kentucky Colonel, and a long-serving Deacon and Song Leader at Newton Creek.
For many, including his family, Bob was the best man they ever knew - a solid and honest husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, friend and life-coach, with an
abundant and dry sense of humor.
His last moments were spent with his nephew, Russell Thompson, and holding the hands of his son and brother who could not go through with him, but walked right up to the
door. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Burean Thompson, and mother, Della Roberson Thompson, his beloved sister Virginia Thompson Kaler and a step-brother Maurice Brigman.
He is survived by his only child; Robert W. Thompson (Cathy), grandson, Ian Robert Thompson, and great-grandaughter, Isabella Thompson, all of Lousville, a brother, Billy (Fuzz) G. Thompson (Ruby) of Ragland, a half sister, Ann Brigman Nearing (Larry) of Seal Rock, Oregon, a step-sister, Hilda Brigman Cole of Jackson, Tennessee and a close-knit host of Kaler, Thompson, Nearing & Gibson nephews and nieces.
