In later life, Mary Jane taught a certified nursing assistant program to hundreds of students in Illinois. She also acted as a nurse to many in Barlow, providing first aid and explaining medical terminology.
Ms. Farris enjoyed an extensive circle of friends in Barlow. She enjoyed visiting with her friends and they often had potlucks where cards or dominoes followed the meal. Mary Jane was close to her own children, grandchildren, and siblings. She also treated the friends of her children as if they were her own. When she was still able, she also enjoyed fishing, "going to the boat," and traveling. She was an avid reader and had learned to enjoy Netflix and other TV streaming services.
